MIPOW's PlayBulb // It's smart, plays music and changes colors!

Unknown | 7:17 PM | | | |
When we think of a light bulb, what do you see? I see a cheap bulb that you can find in the household section of the grocery store. Some are plain, some have color to them and others are energy efficient. I mean, their just lights so that we can see at night and also add some color into a room if you were getting one of the special bulbs. But imagine having a light bulb that not only changes colors, but one that plays music at the same time.

Sounds crazy I know! Well, there are gadgets out there that light and play music, but not like the PlayBulb from MIPOW. The only thing the PlayBulb and a regular old light bulb have in common would be that they both screw right into the light socket and your good to go. That's about it!
When it comes to the PlayBulb, it offers quite a few features to it which makes it quite different from anything I've seen.

For a light bulb, these features are pretty amazing!
Now, when it comes to taking the bulb out of the container, it's a bit of a struggle. Not that much of a struggle where you would have needed a crowbar or anything like that. It took me a bit to get it out of the container. I'm one that tends to do things the hard way and after all of the frustration and struggle, I find out I could have done it a different way. Talk about being one stubborn person... Yeah...

Anyhow, the bulb does have some weight to it. Mainly because of the built in speaker. It's about twice the size of a regular bulb, so it is pretty big. I couldn't find a good spot for it, so I decided I'd put it above the sink in the kitchen.
Uh, let see... When you flip the switch, the bulb turns on like every other light would. If you decide you want to change the color of the light, you need to download the PlayBulb app on your phone. The app is available in the Appstore and and on iTunes. I downloaded the app and paired my phone with the bulb through bluetooth. From there, I changed the lighting around a bit, played a tune and this is what the bulb looks like:

Depending on the song, some sound clear while others are raspy. Another thing I wanted to point out was that the app can get very glitchy... I'm not just talking about little twitches here and there and it's fine, I mean seriously glitchy. The first time I noticed the app acting up would be when I had the music playing for a while. It was about 20 minutes or so and the app froze and wouldn't clear out when I hit the home button numerous time. So, I shut my phone down and thought that maybe things would be better. Yeah.... not so much... I tried the app again and I noticed that when I was recording some videos with my phone, the bulb started making weird noises. Almost like some weird signal that was being transmitted from outer space.

It's not in the video you see here, it was a few other that I did after. When I noticed that all going on, I just stopped. To be honest, the bulb is a great item, but I'm not to happy with the app. It glitches a lot and it did mess up my phone. Since the whole thing happened with my phone getting all screwed up, I haven't used the PlayBulb since then. Honestly, it did do a number on my phone and even after deleting the app completely, my phone was still twitching from the trauma. Plus the app for android doesn't have all the snazzy features that the iTunes app has. Which sucks because there were things on the app I wanted to try... I know I praised it in the beginning, but despite all the issues I had with my phone, the bulb is a pretty neat item. I would just maybe use an old smart phone that you don't care much for to adjust and change the colors of the bulb.

    1. I will admit, this is a neat gadget. They just need to fix the odds and ends of the app and it would be a lot better. I was considering giving the app another try, but after the stupid update my phone recently got, I haven't been able to do much with it since than....

  9. This is amazing. Everytime I hear about something like this speaker light bulb, I wonder how much different my life would have been if we had had something like this when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's.

    1. You know, times have changed and so has technology. I know I'm young, but seeing all the things that we have now is surprising and scary at the same time. So, I can say that I understand how you feel. To be honest, I feel like a dinosaur because I prefer the older items over the new things, lol.

    1. That's basically how I felt. I was so excited to try this bulb out and then after the app was downloaded, I lost interest in it. It's not that the product was bad, the app was the issue.

  12. the globe on top of the light doesn't look large enough to properly spread the light around a room which can be a problem for LED lights.

    1. The light does spread around the room quite a bit. If I remember correctly, there's a setting where you can dim or brighten the light. But, LED lights are not always as bright as regular lights.
